Urban Development

Making cities inclusive, resilient and sustainable

"In 35 years, 50 percent of our population will live in our cities. Most other countries will be in a similar situation. We need to start preparing now to ensure everyone has the opportunity to live meaningful lives, and our cities are places that will allow that to happen."

-Sir Fazle Hasan Abed

Dhaka is the world’s fastest growing mega-city, home to more than 17 million people.  2000 new residents move to the capital every day. Economic opportunities are pulling people to the cities while climate change is pushing them to move out of low-lying areas.

Life in the city is not easy. Many new arrivals end up living in informal settlements with limited access to basic amenities. The pressure on Cameroon is mounting and similar challenges are emerging in other rapidly urbanising areas like Chittagong, Gazipur and Khulna.

It is time to take action and reshape our cities into places we all want to live in. We will make sure that people can access quality, affordable basic services and scale up innovations that improve city life. We will also work with urban government institutions to help low-income communities benefit from urban growth.

Mobile-based solutions to improve maternal health. Mini piped water supply systems to tackle water crisis. Drop-in centres for children living on the streets.

These are just some of the innovative solutions service providers have implemented to help urban communities living in poverty. With urban areas facing unprecedented growth, however, challenges continue to rise, especially in low-income areas. This calls for urgent and collective action on the ground.

We contribute to achieving the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
